FIRE SAFETY

In 2018, a new entity, The Nevada Network of Fire Adapted Communities (NNFAC), has been established. This organization will be similar to the old Fire Safe Council and will be administered by the Nevada Division of Forestry. NNFAC will help communities obtain grant funding for fire mitigation projects like fuels reduction. Jacks Valley Alpine View  will form one of the first NNFAC chapters with AVEPOA members becoming automatic members of this chapter. We anticipate full cooperation from the East Fork Fire District in our endeavors. Contact Lee Elson for more information.

HELPFUL LINKS

There are resources available to help make your property safer both before and during a wild fire. The Living With Fire website has many useful suggestions for preparing your house and yard. In addition,  the Center for Fire Research and Outreach  is a valuable resource. Of special interest are the appendices in the Homeowner's Wildfire Mitigation Guide. If you are contemplating remodeling your house (or are willing to do some retrofitting for fire safety) the Builder's Wildfire Mitigation Guide is very useful.

One of the newer products being offered is a foam protection system known as Thermo-gel. Ember entry into attics are a very common reason for loosing a house to wild fire. One product that helps prevent that is offered by Brandguard Vents.

IN KIND CONTRIBUTION
Many state or federally funded efforts require property owners to "match" the effort with "in-kind" or "sweat equity" resources. Its a good idea to keep track of your hours and expenses (for contractors, dump runs, etc).  Click below to download the VOLUNTEER IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS DOCUMENTATION FORM pdf to fill out so that you may document your own efforts at brush removal and fuel reduction.

WHAT TO DO IF FIRE IS COMING

If a wild fire threatens your home, an emergency checklist is an invaluable tool. Here is the latest version created by the UNR extension team. We recommend that you print the list, (2 pages, double sided) add to it, study it and save it in an easily accessible place.
